One solution lies in the East. The Russian Federation has some wonderful toy and kit manufacturers. The leaders are TEKNOLOG. They make 25, 35, 40 and 54mm figures and kits.
The 54mm figures are for a nice mixed fantasy-historical Steampunk style mash-up called EMPIRE OF FANTASY, where Romans and Vikings can face Zombies and Space Aliens and Napoleonics.
Unfortunately the true sci-fi theme they have is done in 35-40mm but the kits of cyborgs and machines can be converted for use with 54mm as drones and cyborgs.
Even more unfortunate is the fact Teknolog will not deal outside Russia. One must turn to EBAY.
The sets we are interested in come in 5 figure packs. They cost about a dollar per figure.
The plastic is hard but not brittle. It carves and welds quite well. To paint them use a good undercoat or sealant. They take spray-can paint well.
There is a long history of fine model soldier artistry in Russia and these mass-produced cheap figures show their heritage.SEE HERE.
I think they are attractive, well-sculpted and stylish. They may sometimes be a little static for moulding considerations but with a little modification this can be solved.
If you dont want to convert these figures they can look good with just a nice paint job.
Weapons can be changed, hacked-about a bit, or just re-identified to match the DF inventory.

In addition to this wealth of potential for Verminators and Pests we have a range of kits which can be machines or war-machines or alien things. Once I get round to surface excursions these will come into use. The great thing about 54mm is that the limited table means only a few models are needed.
